First Year Students (September 2013 entry)
If you will be a first year undergraduate student new to the UEA (however, please see exceptions below*) OR an International (non-EU) first year postgraduate student, you are guaranteed accommodation as a single student in University Residences, provided that you meet these requirements:
- You are starting a full-time course at UEA in the Autumn term.
- You are listed as a student before the end of the 23rd August (11.59pm GMT on the 23rd of August 2013). To list you as a new student, the University must have received your formal acceptance of an unconditional offer of a place (for more information see “What happens next”).
- You ensure that we have received your application for accommodation before the end of the 31st July (11.59pm GMT on the 31st July 2013).
* The following categories of students are not guaranteed accommodation:
- Students who live in an approximate 12 mile radius of the UEA (see details below).
- Students with a UK or EU fee status starting an undergraduate course and have lived in UEA accommodation during a previous wholly or partially completed undergraduate course.
- Students with a UK or EU fee status starting the first year of an undergraduate course, and have lived in UEA accommodation during their foundation year.
The Guarantee
Your guarantee is for a room in University residences (or accommodation otherwise managed by the University), not for a room of a particular type, or necessarily a single room. This means that we cannot guarantee that you will be allocated your preferred residence or type of room, but we promise to do our best. If we do not have enough single rooms to meet demand, you may be offered a twin room to share with another student of the same sex as a temporary measure. Usually, as the term progresses, we are able to offer all guaranteed students a single room of their own.
Undergraduate Students living within a 12-mile radius of the University.
Students who live locally (approximately within a 12 mile radius of the University) are not guaranteed accommodation, but are encouraged to apply for a room. We will contact all students on the waiting list immediately if they have been allocated a room via the e-mail address that they used to submit their application and will keep all other students on the waiting list updated regularly.
Second Third and Final Year Undergraduate Students
International (Overseas) fee status undergraduate students from outside the EU are guaranteed accommodation beginning each Autumn semester for the duration of their course provided they apply each year when requested to do so.
Returning EU and UK undergraduate students are not guaranteed accommodation in UEA residences after their first year of study.
Students who have restricted mobility, require personal support or who have other special requirements, may also be eligible for accommodation for the duration of their course provided their application is supported by the Dean of Students’ Office
Students with Individual Requirements
If you have a disability or any specific requirements with regards to your room allocation, please let us know when you apply. We will liaise with specially trained staff at the Dean of Students' Office to make sure that we allocate the most appropriate room for you. Our aim is to provide accessible accommodation, and all the support you need to assist you in managing your individual situation.
Students with disabilities
If you're a student with a disability, your application will be prioritised to reserve the most appropriate type of room for your needs. It is also highly likely that we will be able to provide accommodation for you for the duration of your studies.
Adapted rooms for wheelchair users or students with restricted mobility are available in Britten House, Colman House, Orwell and Wolfson Close, and the University Village. We may be able to provide accommodation for live-in carers where necessary.
For hearing impaired students, we can arrange modified fire alarm systems. We also have rooms without carpets for students with severe dust or wool allergies. For non-wheelchair users who have mobility problems or a visual impairment, we can make sure we allocate the most appropriate residence and location, and make minor modifications where necessary.
To apply for a room, fill in the online application form, giving details of your requirements in the disability/medical field. We also recommend that you contact our Disability Co-ordinator Jane Abson (j.abson@uea.ac.uk or Tel: +44 (0)1603 593693) at the Dean of Students' Office. Jane will discuss your individual situation and the support available to you. In addition, we have a dedicated Accommodation Co-ordinator who can advise you on your application at any stage.
Students with personal and medical requirements
If you require a particular type of room for medical reasons, please let us know when you apply - we may be able to reserve an appropriate room for you. Please also let us know if you require a fridge in your room as they are not allowed except on medical grounds, and with our prior permission. To support your application, you should also contact the Dean of Students' Office. They may ask you for relevant certification, or for more details to help them understand your condition, so that they can provide appropriate support.
If you have personal welfare or cultural issues affecting your room allocation, please let us know when you apply. We will do our best to meet your requests.
