The non-fiction contents of the GOP is both more important, and more difficult to classify, than the fiction contents. A series of articles on one main topic may have very different titles; some titles give little clue to the contents of the article. The name of the author, however, is usually of importance, for research purposes and for general interest. So the index was initially sorted by author, and the non-fiction Author index is available as a hyperlinked web-page; see above.
It was decided to allocate a 'subject' heading to each article. A list of these arbitrary headings, with their code letters, is here. It was then possible to sort by subject, after a preliminary sort by author. The non-fiction Subject index is available as a hyperlinked Web page; see above.
